Bikes and buses and cars, oh my!

North Beach's street grid is, well, not exactly a grid. A major thoroughfare, Columbus Avenue, runs diagonal through some of the oldest blocks in the city, extending from the Financial District to Fisherman's Warf. Streetcars, buses, pedestrians, cars, bikes and scooters all intermingle in this bustling crossroads. How do you create a streetscape that serves everyone?

North Beach Neighbors' Complete Streets Committee is focused on this very issue. Here's how our organization is getting involved:

  • Advocating for a thoughtful approach to the Central Subway extension into North Beach, a project that 89% of our Members support.

  • Improving pedestrian safety at troubled intersections like Columbus/Filbert and nearby streets where children walk between our parks, schools, and churches.
